Self-absorbed teacher of the year, Mr. Howard, finds himself cornered into teaching summer school and must put aside his summer plans to teach a rag-tag group of less-than-scholarly students.
Synopsis:
Mr. Howard is a heartwarming dramedy that follows John Howard, a self-absorbed recent recipient of teacher of the year, who finds himself reluctantly assigned to summer school duty. When John is forced to teach struggling students he initially dismisses, his carefully constructed world begins to unravel. As he slowly connects with his misunderstood summer school students—a basketball star hiding his intelligence, a boy caring for his younger siblings, a girl with undiagnosed dyslexia, and one very distracted student—he discovers that good teaching transcends test scores and accolades. Meanwhile, his long-standing friendship with fellow teacher Maggie begins to blossom into something more, adding unexpected complications to his professional dilemma. When offered his dream job at a prestigious prep school, John must decide what success really means to him, challenging his newfound romance with Maggie, his relationship with his gruff but wise mentor Bob, and the connections with students who unexpectedly changed his life.
Mr. Howard is meant to be a tender exploration of growth, connection, and finding purpose where you least expect it. The goal is to deliver genuine laughs alongside poignant moments that remind us how the people we try to help often end up helping us. We tried to include relatable characters, authentic emotion, and universal themes about how we measure success in the hopes of offering a fresh take on the transformative power of teaching and learning to value what truly matters.
